Rat Treatments

Mess left by roof rats in the ceiling

Roof Rats

How often do you hear noises in the roof  and you’re unsure if its roof rats or possums, in or on top of your roof. What do you do?

What ever you do you need to take steps to stop them quickly.

Over the years I have seen plenty of examples of roof rats causing damage to homes, the list includesrats nests in insulation

  • Chewing cables
  • chewing holes in the gyprock
  • pulling the insulation to small pieces for nest building
  • chewing through plastic water pipes
  • chewing through air conditioning ducting

Rats are destructive little things.

They bring food back in to their nest sites and generally make a hell of a mess.

If you have a macadamia nut tree close by, you can guarantee  you will have a roof full chewed nut shells.

Methods of Rat Control

Pest Control Company

Generally a pest controller will investigate the area and use some sort of bait system to control the rat infestation. They will usually charge a call out fee  and charge to place the baits.

Most times they will not be able to identiy if there’s possums as well.

Poisonous baiting

Baiting rats is the most common method of rat control.

The biggest problem is that they run off and die somewhere! you can’t be sure it won’t die in your roof and stink out your house!

It’s a cruel death, even though rats are destructive rodents, they don’t deserve a cruel death.

The common ingredients in rat bait are:

Anticoagulants: These are chemicals that cause internal bleeding in a rodent, as they block the production of the coagulating factors. Some of the common anticoagulants used are warfarins, indandiones and difethialone.
Metal Phosphides: They are quick acting poisons that can kill a rat in a matter of a few hours by attacking vital organs as well as the central nervous system of the rat. Commonly used metal phosphides are zinc phosphide, used as baits to kill rats, as well as aluminum phosphide, calcium phosphide and magnesium phosphide which are fumigants.
Calciferols: These are nothing but different forms of Vitamin D, namely Vitamins D2 and D3 also known as cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol, respectively. They work by increasing the calcium concentration in the body of a rodent, leading to calcification of organs and ultimately death. Calciferols need to be added to the poisons in high dosage for them to work effectively.

Rat traps

There are many types of traps from the home made ones to the high sophisticated electronic rat traps.

Trapping can be good and bad.

Some traps catch the rat live and leave it up to you to do the killing of the rat.

Others leave some blood and gore.
